Nassau Community College Presents Two Programs About Anorexia, Bulimia
& Bipolar Disorder: Author and Mental Health Advocate Marya Hornbacher
Garden City, NY – The Nassau Community College Cultural Program is proud to present Marya Hornbacher, best-selling author and mental health advocate, in two separate presentations on Wednesday, October 19. "Wasted: My Journey Through Anorexia and Bulimia" at 11:00 a.m. and "Madness: A Bipolar Life" at 2:00 p.m. will both take place in the College Center Building.
"Wasted: My Journey Through Anorexia and Bulimia" begins with a brief reading from Hornbacher's classic book "Wasted." She then moves on to her own story, discussing what it's really like to live with an eating disorder. Hornbacher discusses her belief that our entire culture is engaged in the eating disorder game and the ways each of us — eating disordered or not — are affected by media messages, social norms, and our own obsessions with body and food.
In "Madness: A Bipolar Life," Hornbacher reads from her best-selling memoir of the same name. The book tells the story of her nearly being beaten by, but ultimately triumphing over, severe and persistent mental illness. Hornbacher testifies to the real possibility for healthy, satisfying lives for mentally ill people. She also urges listeners to think about how they can make it happen in theirs.
