A mysterious Inspector questions members of a prosperous British family, the Birlings, about the untimely death of Eva Smith, a working class factory girl to whom each had a connection. Although considered a suicide, Inspector Goole presses the various members of the family for information about the part each may have played in the exploitation, abandonment and social ruin that may have led to her desperate act. Setting: The Birlings' home, Brumley, England, 1912.
This drama is considered a classic of 20th Century Theatre.
