By Lynn Nottage
Esther is an ambitious and self-reliant thirty-something African American seamstress living on her own in a boarding house in lower Manhattan, circa 1905. As she works tirelessly to create beautiful custom-made lingerie for New York's uptown ladies, and the downtown ladies of the evening, Esther yearns for true love - and a business of her own. In spite of the social dictates of the time with regard to class, race, age and gender, Esther forges ahead to pursue her dreams.
"Intimate Apparel," for which playwright Lynn Nottage received the prestigious Steinberg Prize for Playwriting, was the 2004 New York Drama Critics Award Winner for Best Play.
Nottage, a Brooklyn native, was the recipient of the MacArthur Genius Award in 2007 and, in 2009, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her play, "Ruined."
