Admission to the Nursing Program at Nassau Community College is granted to applicants via one of the following procedures: (a) change of program; (b) transfer from another college; (c) articulation with selected Licensed Practical Nurse programs; or (d) through the Program for Advanced Standing in Nursing Courses. Obtaining a seat in the Nursing Program is highly competitive. Meeting the stipulated criteria does not guarantee a seat. All applicants to the Nursing Program – i.e.,change of program candidates and transfer students – must be legally eligible for employment and licensure in the United States at the time of application to the Nursing Program.
As of the Fall 2013 Semester and thereafter students will not be admitted to the Nursing program directly from High School. All applictants to the Nursing program will have to complete the 13 credit sequence of pre-nursing Liberal Arts courses: ENG 101, AHS 131, PSY 203 and MAT 102.

To whom does this apply?
If you have ever attended college in the past (either at Nassau Community College or elsewhere), you must have completed (and have grades for) the four courses (13 credits) of the pre-nursing sequence of liberal arts courses required for consideration to the Nursing Program. This applies to all applicants with previous college credit, whether you completed just one course or an entire degree program.
The four courses - 13 credits are:
Applicable science courses completed ten or more years prior to admission to the nursing program will not be accepted. Applicants will not be considered for admission to the nursing program if they have attempted AHS 131 more than twice (including grades of W).
NOTE: If you have taken some or all of these courses at another college, the course numbers may vary, but the course descriptions must match NCC's course description.
Upon completion of these courses, you must have an average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.00 scale) and at least a grade of C in all of these courses in order to be CONSIDERED for admission to the Nursing Program. (See College catalog for numerical equivalents of letter grades if you are not familiar with these equivalents.)
PRE-NURSING TEST
All applicants to the Nursing program are required to take the ATI pre-nursing test (TEAS). The scores should be sent to the NCC Nursing Department prior to the last day for submission of applications or to the Office of Admissions if you have submitted your application to the Office of Admissions:
The applicant is responsible for the cost of the examination. Information about the examination will be available from the Office of Admissions and from the Nursing Department (516-572-9630).
PLEASE NOTE THAT MEETING ALL THE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS DOES NOT GUARANTEE AN APPLICANT A SEAT THE NURSING PROGRAM.
(entering NCC as a liberal arts [“pre-nursing”] student and then changing to Nursing; apply through the Nursing Department)
You may take all of your prerequisite courses at NCC, or you may use a combination of courses from other colleges and courses from Nassau Community College when applying to the Nursing Program, in order to complete the 13-credit sequence. If NCC is the last college you attended, or if you are currently attending NCC, you should not file a new application for admission to the Nursing Program. Instead, you must apply as a “change of program” student by presenting your records (from ALL colleges attended) and the results of the TEAS test to the Nursing Department (Life Sciences Building, 1st floor office) in either the second, third or fourth week of March for consideration for the following September, or in the second, third or fourth week of October, for consideration for the following January.
TRANSFER FROM ANOTHER COLLEGE
(Apply through the Office of Admissions)
If you are not yet attending Nassau Community College, you may apply to Nassau’s Nursing Program through the Office of Admissions if the following conditions are met:
The opportunity for “advanced standing” is available to LPNs. This procedure enables you to “challenge” the first semester of Nursing (NUR 101) and enter the Nursing Program as a second semester student.
Advanced Standing students will have to provide a written response to a scenario presented during an in-person interview.
To challenge NUR 101:
In order to qualify for admission with Advanced Standing after completing an L.P.N. program at BOCES or VEEB, candidates must:
Candidates should contact the Advanced Standing Advisor at Nursing@ncc.edu
THERE IS NO WAITING LIST FOR ADMISSION TO NASSAU COMMUNITY COLLEGE’S NURSING PROGRAM.
If you were not offered a seat in the Nursing Program when you first applied, you are welcome to apply at the next application period. There is no limit to the number of times you may apply.
If you were previously admitted to our Nursing Program and chose not to attend, you will have to re-apply and meet the current criteria for admission. Having been admitted in the past does not guarantee that you will be admitted once again, as the applicant pool changes every year.
If you are submitting high school and/or college records from a school outside the United States, you may be asked to have these records evaluated by an independent agency, such as the World Education Services in New York City, to determine whether or not you are eligible for admission and whether or not we will be able to award you any transfer credit.
If you were educated as a nurse outside the United States, you may or may not require further education in order to become an R.N. in the United States. To make this determination, you should obtain an application for the required verification of your credentials from The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS), P.O. Box 8628, Philadelphia, PA 19104-8628. Phone: 215.349.8767; Fax: 215.662.0425; E-mail: empire@cgfns.org; Web: www.cgfns.org.
